Letter from the CEO: Logistics Industry Leads the Charge in Neurodiverse Hiring Initiatives

The logistics industry is stepping up as a leader in the movement to embrace neurodiversity in the workplace, paving the way for more inclusive hiring practices and creating opportunities for autistic individuals. While tech giants like Microsoft and SAP have long championed the benefits of neurodiverse talent, companies in the logistics sector are now taking bold action to foster innovation through inclusion.

At the forefront of this shift are Bergen Logistics and MTS Logistics, both of which are setting powerful examples of what true inclusion looks like. Their efforts demonstrate that there are various ways to show support for neurodiverse hiring initiatives, whether through raising awareness and funding, providing job training, or creating permanent employment opportunities.

A shining example of these efforts is the 14th Annual MTS Bike Tour for Autism Acceptance. Held in New York City, the event drew over 150 participants from across the logistics industry and raised an impressive $120,000 to support programs that provide direct assistance to autistic individuals. The funds raised from the bike tour are directly contributing to internships at partner companies, where neurodiverse individuals are given the chance to build their skills and gain meaningful employment experience.

MTS Logistics, led by its President, Sedat Saka, has made autism acceptance a personal mission. As the father of neurodiverse children, Saka is deeply committed to creating pathways for individuals on the autism spectrum to succeed. “The MTS Bike Tour started as a way to support and uplift the autism community,” says Saka. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see how it has grown into a movement that’s driving real change in our industry.”

While MTS Logistics uses events like the Bike Tour to raise awareness and financial support, Bergen Logistics is leading the charge in a different but equally impactful way. Through their partnership with Spectrum Works, Bergen Logistics provides hands-on job training for autistic high school students. The company also offers internships and long-term employment opportunities, helping to transition neurodiverse individuals from school to the workforce. In addition, Bergen Logistics is taking steps to educate their international staff and customers on the value of neurodiversity, fostering a more inclusive company culture and raising awareness on a global scale.

Charles Ickes, CEO of Bergen Logistics, believes that this focus on neurodiverse hiring strengthens both the company and the broader community. “Embracing neurodiversity not only enriches our workforce but also strengthens our company culture and pushes the boundaries of what is achievable in our organizations and communities,” says Ickes.

Companies like MTS and Bergen Logistics, along with partners such as Turkish Airlines and Maersk, are illustrating how businesses can support neurodiversity in unique ways. Whether it’s through raising awareness and funding, providing internships, or offering permanent employment, these organizations are helping to create an industry where neurodiverse individuals can thrive.

The personal stories of students like Hennessey Kingsley, Sywon Sims, Bryan Cubero, Deon Duran, Kiernan Smith, and Everton Hodges Campbell, who have participated in Spectrum Works’ job training programs, serve as proof of the program’s transformative impact. Hennessey, who shared her experience at the MTS Bike Tour event, spoke about how her internship helped her gain confidence and develop new skills. Sywon Sims’ story is another powerful testament to the program’s success—after completing job training, he was offered a permanent position at Rent the Runway, showcasing how these programs can lead to lasting career opportunities. Similarly, Bryan, Deon, Kiernan, and Everton were hired by Bergen Logistics after completing their internships, further demonstrating the potential of these initiatives to open doors for neurodiverse individuals in the workforce.

By embracing neurodiverse hiring initiatives, the logistics industry is not only changing lives but also setting a standard for others to follow. These companies are building inclusive workforces that benefit from the unique talents and perspectives that neurodiverse individuals bring to the table. As the movement continues to grow, it’s clear that the logistics sector is leading the way toward a future where diversity is not only celebrated but seen as essential to business success.

The examples set by MTS Logistics, Bergen Logistics, and their partners highlight the power of inclusivity. They show that when companies open their doors to neurodiverse individuals, they don’t just change lives—they strengthen their workforce and create a ripple effect of acceptance and innovation that spreads across industries.
